Family Versus Fishing

We are finding out that it’s very difficult to go Salmon fishing as a whole family and expect to catch much. You would think we would learn that pretty quickly, but I guess it didn’t sink in the first couple times and we just keep trying.

We just got back from the Russian River again yesterday. Church friends kept talking about this great fishing hole just below the Russian River Falls. Salmon were trapped here as they tried to get up the strength to jump the falls and people were catching their limit (6 fish) in half an hour.

I guess it didn’t register that these were young guys talking, ones who had bikes and no children. We borrowed some gear and off we went to the fishing hole!

It was a four mile hike just to get back to the fishing spot beneath the falls. We did it in two hours, but that didn’t leave us much time to fish if we were going to get back out before bedtime.

The Russian River Falls was gorgeous though, and we saw some fish jumping. How Salmon can make it up that roaring, rushing waterfall I do not understand.

An old guy at the falls offered to take our family pics. He seemed astonished that we had made it all the way back there with three children in tow.

So we came home fishless and have decided that maybe we should keep our family fishing trips to places we can drive to, and if Andy wants to do some serious salmon fishing he should probably go by himself.

At least we got to see some beautiful falls and have the accomplished (and sore) feeling of having hiked eight miles!

  1. I loved this post! Good for you, getting out and doing stuff with your children, even if it doesn’t work the way you’d hoped. You’ll enjoy the memories. Thanks for sharing the pictures!

  2. Oh but I am so proud of you for going together with your little’s ! Family time is more important then fish anyhow . Unless your starving 😨

    1. You are right of course! I think next time we might just go fishing for fun as a family and leave the serious hiking/fishing to Andy. Then the kiddos wouldn’t have such tired and stressed out parents! 😜
