Cheesy Biscuits

We’re planning to go north for a caribou hunt next week, so I’ve been busy planning meals and cooking what I can ahead of time for the days we’ll be camping.

We have a two burner camp stove, so we’re not really roughing it. I’m taking soups frozen in a gallon bucket for two of the suppers because I’ll only have to take one pot to heat them in, and if they’re frozen when we leave they can act as ice to keep the cooler cold.

To go along with the soups, I made a double batch of cheesy biscuits to freeze and take along. These are amazing by themselves, and really yummy when paired with a soup.

Cheesy Biscuits

2 cups flour

3 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup butter, melted

1 cup sour cream

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Mix the dry ingredients first, then add the rest. Plop onto a baking sheet and bake at 400 for 12-15 minutes.

  1. We do a lot of boil-bag meals which we freeze for hunting — about a week’s worth depending on the time of year (cooler weather). It makes for a cleaner camp and easier/more enjoyable downtime with less cleanup. Our meals include everything from breakfast (yes, you can freeze scrambled eggs) to enchilada casserole, Mexican chicken, chili (if frozen, acts as a coolant for the rest of meals, etc.), spaghetti, rice side dishes and more. I freeze our meals in single portions so we can eat right out of the bag and burn in the campfire when done. We have done this for decades and it works great, especially when in bear country. (Makes it even easier to freeze leftovers and get ahead of the game.)

  2. I just tried these biscuits for lunch and they’re delicious… thanks for a new favorite recipe. (= Have a good hunt!

  3. Im saving this! Super yummy and practical idea! I did this just on vacation in the mountains one time. Nothing speaks relaxing like easy, yummy meals.
