Exploring An Ice Field By Airplane

We were eating lunch after church when Dale asked if we’d be interested in going along on a plane ride to fly over some glaciers. He recently got his pilot’s license and likes an excuse to take a plane up in the air.

Of course we wanted to go!

After making some hasty arrangements for the children to stay at a friend’s house, we met Dale and Krystal at the airport and climbed into the four seater airplane for takeoff.

The higher we climbed the more awed I felt. You get a completely different perspective from the air, and Alaska is beautiful and vast and largely uninhabited.

We flew East toward the mountain range, where several glaciers spilled down from between the peaks. The houses and roads ended only a few miles from the coast, and as we flew inland it was only muskeg and spruce and aspen trees, dotted with lakes as far as the eyes could see.

The plane topped the glacier, and we flew into the Harding Ice Field, suddenly surrounded by a world of white, completely untouched by humans.

It was the experience of a lifetime, and the majesty and splendor made me stand in awe of how big God is. What a beautiful world He has made!

Ready for takeoff!
Harding Ice Field. It’s a white winter world in the mountains!
Fall colors in the Tundra
Skilak lake. Run-off from the glacier makes it this gorgeous teal color
