I’ve been seeing a lot of yogurt recipes floating around the internet lately, but most of them take an instapot, and that is something I do not have.
So if you’re like me and love eating yogurt and getting some good probiotics in your diet but lack fancy equipment, this recipe is for you! I’ve been making this since I was a teenager and it is so simple I have it memorized.
Homemade Yogurt
1 gallon milk
2 T. unflavored gelatin
2 T. vanilla
1 1/2 cups sugar (or 2/3 t. END stevia)
1/3 cup yogurt for starter
Pour half the gallon of milk into a pan and heat to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, or until you see a skin and bubbles on the top. Mix the 2 Tablespoons of unflavored gelatin with 1/3 cup water and stir to dissolve. Add to the hot milk, and stir in the sugar and vanilla. Whisk thoroughly and add the rest of the milk. Using a thermometer, bring the temperature to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from heat and stir the yogurt starter in. Mix well.
Pour into jars or containers and the yogurt will need to incubate for 6-8 hours. If your oven has a pilot light, the easiest way is to put the jars of yogurt in there and start the timer for 6 hours. If your stove is electric, you can put your jars in an ice chest and cover with hot tap water that is around 115 degrees. Shut the lid, and let set 6-8 hours.
When the time is up, remove the jars from the oven or ice chest, and refrigerate to cool. Serve with granola, baked oatmeal, or fruit.
