The Travel

It’s been an epic trip so far. Gabe’s excitement is so fun to stoke. I got pretty excited myself when the plane took off. What excitement! All three children did really well. Maybe it’s due in part to all our practice sessions for sitting on the airplane.

The first flight included some drama since they split us up. Andy had the worst of it all by himself with Gabe and Jasmine. I heard later that Gabe had to use the bathroom as soon as we all got buckled in and then Jasmine proceeded to fill her diaper and throw up.

I had a window seat with Oscar on my lap and two very big burly guys between me and the aisle. I didn’t even try to get out and go to the bathroom. Thankfully Oscar slept most of the flight (4 or so hours) and I just looked out the window or dozed for the most part while the two guys discussed the problems of the world. It was interesting to eavesdrop. One of the guys asked me about my head covering and if I was part of a sect so I got to witness to him. That was great! He said he believed in Jesus too.

Gabe loved the escalators! He’s only ever heard about them in the book about Corduroy the bear. He wanted to go on every one he saw no matter what direction it was going.

The jet lag started kicking in toward the end of the trip. With the four hour time difference and changing planes during the night, the children each got about 2 1/2 hours of restless sleep.

It was so fun to fly with children because to them everything is so big and exciting.
After 26 hours of travel we made it safe and sound to Dad and Mom’s house in Ohio.

It is so good to be with my family again! Since we haven’t seen some for a year and a half it has been good to connect well. Sometimes when you live close and see someone often you never talk about anything that really matters. After being so far away for so long, we have been making the time count and being real with each other. It has been so good.

After being gone for a while, I’m seeing a lot of differences in Ohio versus Alaska. It is so busy here! Lots of roads, lots of people, lots of houses. Sometimes I feel like we just came from The Bush. Which maybe we did compared to the East!

Also, everything is so cheap! You can get gas, clothes and groceries for a little bit of nothing. I’m enjoying it!

But in everything we do I am so thankful to God for bringing us here safely and also for this amazing opportunity!

  1. If it is not something that will take to long to answer could you please explain why you wear a head covering and what led you to this decision. I personally believe married women should wear a head covering (my family does not-but we’ve agreed to disagree) and i just want to know someone elses opinion. Unfortunately I do not have a email you could contact me at so if you would not mind replying to this comment or doing a post about it thanks.
    Thanks again

  2. Welcome home. We traveled from Belize with 4 children and it was interesting at Miami airport especially when little Leticia slipped away from us
and we were in a panic until I met a big black policeman carrying her. She seemed to be enjoying herself. Elam
