9 Things You May Not Know About Our Family

‍Here it is Wednesday again and I don’t have a blog post started. In fact, I don’t even have one in my head yet!

I thought for this week I would just tell you a few facts that you may or may not know about our family.

1. We go to bed early

I hear people talk about going to bed at 10-11 PM. How do you do it?! I guess we need more sleep than most.  In the summer when it is light most of the night we get away with going to bed at 9:30-10, but especially in the winter when it has already been dark for a few hours, we hit the sack around 8:30-9. That’s the parents. The children go to bed at 7:30-8. Since we have to wake up for the phone job at five am going to bed late doesn’t work for us.

2. We went for a year without a bathroom light.

That’s right. Last Friday Andy got a light wired up in the bathroom, so for the first time since moving in a year ago we have a light in there! Granted we really didn’t need a light all summer…

The children think it’s magical to flip the switch and a light actually comes on!

3. We LOVE salmon.

All of us. Grilled, broiled, in a dip with crackers, on bread for salmon melts. I usually pack salmon sandwiches for Andy’s lunches when he works construction. Two days ago Andy grilled the best tasting salmon for supper. None of us wanted to eat the fried rice we had on the side. Jasmine kept holding out her bowl and lisping “More fish!” Over and over. I couldn’t believe how much the children ate!

4. We like big breakfasts.

No cereal and milk for us! Eggs, hash browns, toast, bacon, biscuits and gravy, pancakes. Mmmm-hmmm! Jasmine alone can easily put away two eggs for breakfast.

5. Andy is almost six years older than me.

We met when I was 16 and he was 21. I didn’t think he would ever see me as any more than a little girl – younger even than his little sister! Good thing for me he liked me in spite of my youth and immaturity.

6. We both play musical instruments.

He plays the guitar and I play the fiddle and guitar. We don’t play as often as we’d like to, but when we do get them out it’s fun to fill this little cabin with music! We also yodel a little bit – Andy much better than me.

7. We both want a large family.

We’re shooting for ten children, Lord willing, but time will tell. The amazing thing is, having three children under three didn’t change our minds!

Children are a blessing from God and life would be pretty boring without them!

8. We drive an hour to church.

Most of the hour drive is close to the coastline and when we top a hill we can see the ocean.

I really enjoy the drive. On clear Sundays the view of the volcanoes across the inlet are stunning. I take coffee in a travel mug and Andy and I have plenty of time to talk.

9. We live off-grid.

The electric lines stop a mile away, so any electricity we want we have to generate ourselves. We have a generator and wind turbine that re-charge our battery bank and run the freezers a few hours every day. Some day we’d like to get solar panels as well.

There you have it! You may have already known all these things about us, particularly if you are closely related, and ‏if so I hope you weren’t bored.

May God bless your week!
