This year feels so much different than last year.
Last summer at this time we were living in the motorhome and trying to juggle a full time phone job, part time work at the cabins, as well as feeling a lot of pressure to get the shack torn down here on our place so we could build our cabin before winter.
We are busy this summer, yes. I do the phone job six days a week and take care of the children and house and Andy works at the rental cabins two miles down the road as a construction worker/caretaker as well as cutting firewood and doing upkeep here at our place as well.
With the dark winters and lots of light in the summer here in Alaska, there’s always a rush to get as much done as possible before winter comes again. Plus, a lot of work is seasonal and jobs are only available in the summer.
But the biggest difference between last summer and this summer is that this year the pressure is off. Yes, we are busy, but there isn’t the mad scramble to get into better living conditions before cold weather.
No, our cabin is not done yet, and while I would love to have a better floor than plywood and interior siding covering all the insulation, we are warm and comfortable and have it so much better than most people in the world.
So we’re working hard this summer while the jobs last, thankful to be warm, dry, and snug in our unfinished cabin.
Maybe this fall we’ll have the time to work on our cabin a bit more.
Beautiful, beautiful Alaska!!
