Alaska / Visitors!

Family = The Same Kind Of Weird

I’ve often been grateful for technology since our move to Alaska. Even though we are far from our families, email, telephone calls, group chats, and even Facebook help us feel connected and in touch.

I’m glad we’re not living in the 1800’s during the western migration when a handwritten letter took three weeks or more to arrive. I’m not sure I would have been so excited about moving to Alaska if that had been the case.

When Andy and I first talked about living off grid in Alaska, I was excited about the idea, but from the beginning I told Andy if it ever happened it would be very important to me to at least be able to call my folks.

As it turned out, off grid living does not mean roughing it as much as I had thought and we have excellent access to internet as well as phone service.

Even so, we both miss our families a lot at times and so when they come visit us it is a HUGE DEAL!!

Last week we picked up three of my sisters at the airport and were finally able to show them our place in person. Videos and pictures are not the same as actually showing someone around.

I can’t tell you how good it is to have them here for a couple weeks! We have been talking almost nonstop (Andy can testify to this!) and have gotten many projects done around the cabin. As I write, Bethany is making food, Grace is putting polyurethane on my kitchen shelves, and Joanna is putting up shelves in the bathroom. I come from a family who loves to do projects and the cabin is improving for it!

We are also getting in lots of cuddle time with the children. It’s great to have help!

We went to the beach Sunday evening for the first hot dog roast of the summer. It is not very summery here yet, and the breeze coming off the water is around forty degrees year round, but chilly or no, the beach is a lot of fun and also very beautiful with the mountains across the inlet.

  1. It’s so good to see you have a good family time with your sisters. The memories you make will go on a long time even after they are gone. Blessings, Sarah
