I never seem to fully appreciate something until I no longer have it.
We got a used hot water heater, an 80 gallon one, for a low price on Craigslist. It soon became apparent that cheap is not always best.
During the fall it had a couple glitches, and once refused to even start at all. But Andy, being the master jerry-rigger that he is, was able to coax it to life.
At the beginning of December our hot water heater stopped working entirely. Andy worked on it for a while and figured out which part we needed, but it was an expensive fix, so since we were leaving for Talkeetna in three weeks we decided to just live without hot water and order the part in the spring when we got back home.
Heating water on the stove to wash dishes isn’t hard, but heating water for baths is A LOT OF WORK!! It literally takes all day to heat enough water for the four of us to take a bath.
So as you can imagine, excitement was high as we ordered the part we needed to fix the hot water heater and tracked it all the way to our little post office in Anchor Point.
Andy picked it up on Monday and spent the afternoon trying to replace the old part only to find out that he’s still missing a piece of the puzzle.
We all took off in the van for Homer to look for the part, but that wasn’t a hardship since it was a beautiful clear day and Homer has some of the best views overlooking the mountains and bay in the entire state.
Long story short, we couldn’t find the part In Homer. Andy ordered it online and we are back to tracking its progress toward our post office. And in the meantime, our stovetop is crowded with large pots of water heating for baths.
One thing’s for sure, if we ever get this hot water heater fixed, please don’t call, or need anything because I am going to be in the shower all day.
