The Truth About Alaska Living

There are so many things to love about living in Alaska. The scenery, the crisp days, the mountains, and especially the togetherness as we work together to build our cabin and raise our children.

We had our first dusting of snow yesterday morning! Just enough to show some white and make the evergreens look amazing. It stayed most of the day, and Gabe was very excited about the ‘now!’ Or maybe it was just my excitement rubbing off on him. 🙂

We have this tradition of making donuts on the first day we see snow every year. This year it was earlier than ever before!

Then there are the frustrating things about Alaska – mainly the slowness of shipping.

We had to special order our ceiling insulation from the lower 48 because Andy wanted the 24 ft rolls so we wouldn’t have seams that let in cold air. We ordered it more than three weeks ago, and the first delivery date they gave us was October 4.

Well we were happy with that because Josiah was here and could put it in for us! But on the fourth the Home Depot people said it could be another two weeks with a delivery date of October 17.

Well, after calling them every day since the 17th to see if it had arrived yet, Andy finally asked them to track the order, and lo and behold! It has only just arrived in a warehouse in Washington and could be another two weeks until it gets up here. Maybe more, maybe less.

Since insulation is the main thing we are waiting on before moving into the cabin, (it loses all the stove heat out the roof without it), we decided to just cut our losses and go ahead and get the four foot batts that are already here in the Kenai Peninsula.

With the weather getting much colder and the forecast showing more snow, we need to get moved in as soon as we can.

The last few days I have been going out to help Andy with the plumbing whenever Jasmine takes a nap. We don’t have too much farther to go! It’s fun seeing how everything hooks into each other, and the hot water heater, and the well.

Andy does very well on one leg. He often wears a backpack and on Wednesday he hauled wood in it over to the cabin a few peices at a time. He sure isn’t letting a bum leg hold him back much!
