Change of Plans

It’s amazing how quickly life can change. Tuesday evening we put the children to bed and worked late, excited that Wednesday was supposed to be sunny also and hoping we could get the roof finished and the siding stained before rain came Thursday.

Then Andy fell off the roof Wednesday morning.

I was inside taking care of a grumpy Jasmine and trying to finish up dishes and get caught up on phone job stuff so I could go out and start staining when I heard Andy holler for me.

Thankfully he fell on the ground instead of a pile of boards close by, and the big metal shears he had on his tool belt didn’t get him.

He was bleeding from the nose and mouth, but we later found out it was just a nosebleed and he had bitten a chunk out of his lip. Praise the Lord it was nothing internal.

He couldn’t move though, and one of his legs was shorter than the other.

I hurried the children to the van and drove over to our neighbor, Kevin’s house. He had been a Coast Guard for 20 years, and thankfully he was home and came right over.

It wasn’t long until they realized his leg wasn’t just out of place – something was broken. Kevin got him in his truck and they headed to the Homer hospital about 45 minutes away.

Andrea, one of the ladies from church, offered to come get the children and take them to her house, so a couple of hours later I went to the hospital to be with Andy.

After some x-rays and a CT scan, the hospital personnel found out that Andy’s hip was fractured in several places with some floating bone pieces.

To make a long story short, they flew him up to Anchorage (4 1/2 hrs away by car) for surgery. After picking up some things at home for us and the children and taking our puppy to a Matt’s, I drove up to Anchorage last night with another lady from church who sweetly came along to keep me awake.

It is good to be with Andy again! Andrea still has the children, and Andy’s surgery is going to be this afternoon unless postponed. I plan to stay a couple of days before going back to be with Gabe and Jasmine.

Hopefully Andy won’t have to be here much longer than that, although the doctors use scary words like “complicated fracture”, “rehab for a few weeks” and “physical therapy”. I just want him to be able to come home to heal.

Pleade keep us in your prayers. It’s a funny feeling – like God is in control, but the world has fallen out from under your feet. Pray with us that recovery would be fast and that we would somehow be able to get our cabin finished in spite of the setbacks.
